Boards & Commissions
The Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) has a number of boards and commissions that act to advise and direct various activities of our local government. They are established by the Fairbanks North Star Borough Code of Ordinances, specifically the section on Boards and Commissions. Once established, generally, the Mayor appoints and the Assembly confirms new members and re-appointments.
Boards and Commissions have an established regular meeting schedule, which are shown on the Borough Calendar of Events. For more information on a specific board or commission visit their webpage.
Procedural Changes Due to COVID-19
Board and Commission meetings will be conducted in-person and by Zoom or Zoom-only, to be determined after consideration given to the FNSB Operational Status and if the Juanita Helms Administration Center is otherwise open to the public, as outlined in the Modifications and/or Waiver of Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Code Provisions Governing Board and Commission Meetings during the COVID-19 Pandemic (PDF).
If you have questions, please contact the Borough Clerk's Office by phone at (907) 459-1401 or email the Clerk's Office.
How to Listen to Board or Commission Meetings
There are 2 ways to listen to meetings remotely:
How to Provide Testimony
Written testimony continues to be the easiest way to participate in meetings. Submit your comments by using the online contact form on each board or commission webpage.
To sign up for telephonic testimony call the Borough Clerk's Office at (907) 459-1401 once the agenda has been published or complete the telephonic testimony sign-up form on each board or commission webpage.
To complete the form, enter your first and last name, email address, phone number for the Clerk to call you during the meeting, and subject. Subjects are:
- Citizens Comments A - Agenda items not scheduled for public hearing.
- Citizens Comments B - Items other than those appearing on the agenda.
- Public Hearing Items (if applicable)
What to Expect When Testifying Telephonically
Public testimony will be heard from citizens in the order in which they have signed up. The Clerk will call those citizens who have signed up to testify at the phone number provided when it is their turn to speak. If you have signed up, the call you receive will come from an out-of-state number. You will hear an automated voice asking you to press the number "1" to join the meeting.
Once you are placed into the meeting, the Chair will ask that you state your name, spell your last name, and provide your neighborhood or place of residence for the record, then you will have 3 minutes to comment.
Please note: If you do not answer the phone we will move to the next person on the list.
Apply to be a Commissioner
The borough is always looking for citizens to volunteer in various boards and commissions as vacancies occur. Members of boards and commissions must be qualified voters of the borough and remain residents of the borough while in office. Civic-minded individuals who wish to contribute some of their time in support of local government are invited to complete a Boards and Commissions application (PDF).
