Resources for Children

Links to helpful web sites for children.
  • Live Homework Help, via the Alaska State Library.
  • Tumblebooks contains animated, talking picture books for beginners, chapter books with narration, and ebooks to read online--some available in Spanish and French. Also find a variety of National Geographic videos and a section with puzzles and games.
Book-related Database for Youth Books
  • Novelist K-8:  EBSCO's Novelist K-8 is a great source for all things fiction. Its user-friendly interface make it easy to search specifically for a title/author/subject or browse by genre and appeal factors. Award winners are here for browsing too. Find books at a specific reading level and resources for parents and teachers as well

Early Literacy Resources

  • Alaska's 1000 Books Before Kindergarten:   a challenge which encourages family bonding while helping young children to develop the skills that will help them become successful lifelong readers.
  • Ready Raven:  a preschool readiness program for 4- and 5-year olds, provided through the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.

Berry Room Features and Amenities

The Noel Wien Library's Berry Room is currently under renovation! Below is the list of amenities in the Berry Room as it was! Stay tuned! The new Berry Room will offer even more to the children and families in our community when it opens in 2024!

  • Cheryl Bidwell Story Garden – an outdoor discovery garden that is an activity area designed to encourage children to explore their surroundings and use their imaginations. The garden can also be used for storytimes, family picnics, and outdoor activities related to literature and learning involving small children. The goal is to provide intellectual stimulation using textures, sounds, puzzles, and places to explore.
  • An Alaskan Fairy Tale mural by William D. Berry and Trina Schart Hyman - an epic mural which covers an entire wall of the Berry Room, featuring a colorful array of animals, people, and scenery.
  • An Alaskan Birch Grove - three local artists (John Bartlett, Melinda Mattson, and Janlee Irving) combined their talents to create this indoors woodland scene, featuring birch trees and fabric birds and creatures, that complements the mural. The four seasons are represented.
  • AWE early literacy computers for children.
  • Animals in the Berry Room – Winston the turtle and many fish!
